Philip Bagby Award: Studentship in Anthropology 2012

Applications are invited for the above studentship, made possible by the generosity of the Philip Bagby bequest, to be held for one or two academic years from October 2012. The studentship is restricted to doctoral research on “the comparative study of the development of urban, literate cultures in accordance with anthropological principles and methods”. The value is approximately £10,000 per annum. The award is available for one or two years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension for a maximum of a further year (i.e. it may be held for a maximum period of three years altogether). Applicants who have already held the award for two years must reapply to obtain a third year of funding as described below, in competition with fresh applicants. Applicants who have not held the award before may apply for one or two years as they wish (please specify). If the successful applicant has not already been accepted on to the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography’s doctoral programme, any award made will be conditional on achieving such acceptance from the 2012/13 academic year. For these purposes, the University’s standard procedures, described elsewhere, apply.

Applications should consist of 1) a doctoral-level proposal (3-4 pp.) containing a description of the project, together with a brief timetable for the proposed research; and 2) a curriculum vitae. Applications should be accompanied by two letters of reference. If the prospective supervisor of the research is not also a referee, then he or she should also provide written confirmation of willingness to supervise (to be included with the application). Supervisors should be established members of the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography’s academic staff or a suitable equivalent. Applicants are advised to consult a member of the academic staff of the School in good time to secure his or her agreement to supervise (without which the School cannot give an applicant a place).

Completed applications should be sent or handed in to the Director of Graduate Studies, c/o Mrs Vicky Dean, Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, 51 Banbury Road, Oxford OX2 6PE (UK) by noon on Friday 24 February 2012.

Preferred applicants will be ranked. The scholarship is granted on the condition that, if the applicant ranked first is subsequently given another major award or withdraws for any other reason, the scholarship will go to the candidate ranked next.
